PLANS to remove five phone boxes in Devizes have been put on hold after one of them could not even be found.

Devizes Town Council was consulted by BT about removing boxes in Potterne Road, London Road, Hillworth Road, Mayenne Place and Dunkirk Hill after it was shown that they were little used.

But officers were unable to find the one in Potterne Road even though BT's survey showed it had been used five times in the past year.

Deputy town clerk Simon Fisher said: "We weren't able to locate the Potterne Road one so we have asked for more information about it."

The survey showed that the kiosk in Hillworth Road with a total of 12 uses in a year was the best used of the five while Dunkirk Hill had no visitors at all.

Mr Fisher said: "The boxes are obviously not well used but we do think the one in Hillworth Road might be worth keeping."

Bt in a report to the council said that reasons for each phone needed to be made as a blanket objection would not carry much weight. BT said: "BT offers the opportunity for parish council and registered charities to adopt a kiosk for just £1, thereby protecting the heritage of the community."
