SCORES of people turned out to support mum Charlotte Hicks who braved the shave in memory of her sister who lost her fight against cancer aged just 28.

Ms Hicks and other regulars at Body Tonic in Sidmouth Street, Devizes, were determined to do their bit to raise money for Macmillan and Stand Up To Cancer.

Salon manager Marie Devlin was delighted with the support from other traders, clients and shoppers who joined in the fundraiser. Mrs Devlin said: "It was amazing. I did a video of the whole thing and it got more than 1.3 million hits. I went into the bank on Monday and someone I don't know recognised me from it.

"The support from the community was absolutely fantastic and the way the other traders in Sidmouth Street rallied behind us as well."

The shop raised around £1,100 for Stand Up To Cancer as male clients were waxed for the charity, a cake stand and a raffle. Mrs Devlin said: "I can't believe we have raised so much.

"I was a bit worried that no-one would turn up but it was just fantastic and I want to thank everyone so much."

Ms Hicks and the rest of her family were devastated six years ago when Hayley Parker died from bowel cancer just three weeks after she was diagnosed.

But on Friday Hayley's mum Sally and son Oliver were at the salon to cheer Ms Hicks on. She said: "Six years ago I was with my sister when they told her that she had cancer. Not knowing the extent of her condition at that time one of her main concerns was losing her hair. Three weeks later I was also with my sister when she passed away.

"To me my actions aren't brave. Brave are all those people going through cancer or having lost their lives to cancer."

She hopes to have raised around £2,000 for Macmillan. Also having her head shaved was Mrs Devlin's friend who is known as Bacardi Coke. Also joining in the event by being waxed were Jason and Gavin Wrobel, Mark Devlin and Josh Hatcher.
