PEOPLE of all ages went behind the scenes at the Devizes NHS Treatment Centre and learnt how to save lives themselves.

The centre in Marshall Road held an open day so visitors could find out more about services and job opportunities. But there was also the chance to whole families to take part in first aid sessions that showed how CPR life support can be given.

With the help of a dummy there was even the chance to have a go at keyhole surgery.

A spokesman for the centre said: "We were delighted that 330 people turned up. That was twice as many as last year. On the day there were a whole variety of activities including behind the scenes tours of the operating theatres and wards.

"Visitors could also try practising bandaging skills on teddies, take part in an X-ray quiz, meet the consultants and take a look at theatre equipment displays.

"Wilbur and friends from Wiltshire Air Ambulance were also in attendance."

Visitors were impressed with what they found. One said: "It was really impressive and great to meet the staff. Having a go at keyhole surgery was brilliant."

Another said: "We had a lovely time looking around. Such lovely friendly staff. My six-year-old grandson enjoyed having a go on the keyhole surgery, bandaging a soft toy, resuscitation doll, and being involved in helping with the tubes to anaesthetize a patient, or on this case a dummy.

"It all helps in preparing him should he ever need to attend a hospital."

The centre provides dental surgery, ear, nose and throat procedures, endoscopy, general surgery, gynaecology, joint replacement assessments, minor orthopaedic surgery, ophthalmology, and urology.
