FAMILIES living on a Devizes housing estate are still trying to get street lighting eight years after the development was built.

Among those angry with the way the issue has been dealt with by David Wilson Homes is Devizes town councillor Andy Johnson.

He has been in a long correspondence with the developer's customer care department but has still not received any date for when the road will be adopted because of problems with the roads that need to be sorted before Wiltshire Council takes responsibility.

Mr Johnson said: "It is ridiculous that after all of these years we are still living without street lighting.

"With winter months approaching again we are very keen to get the lighting working so it is safer for people to walk after dark.

"I have tried everything to get them to take notice but have not got anywhere."

In his last letter to customer care co-ordinator Emma Oliver he said: "As you know the problem of the street lighting not working properly in White Horse way and Combe Walk has been an ongoing issue for at least two years.

"I have talked to Wiltshire Council, to Sovereign Housing Association and to yourselves and your management agents, and it is very clear the responsibility lies firmly with David Wilson Homes.

"Wiltshire Council has told me that there are a number of issues that you have to sort out before they can go ahead with adoption.

"The estate was built about eight years ago. If this is how David Wilson Homes behaves after selling, then I say 'buyer beware'."

In a response to Mr Johnson's complaints the developer said it was speaking to its estate completions manager and he would contact the street lighting contractor to deal with the issues.

But Mr Johnson is worried that the developer is trying to pass the buck to Wiltshire Council.

He has now asked Devizes MP Claire Perry to become involved.
