A TEAM named in memory of Devizes hockey club player Charlie Sherman showed the force was with them when they played a memorial match with Star War characters on the back of their shirts.

The Charlie Sherman Memorial game between Charlie's Angels and The Legends ended in a win for the more experienced Legends in specially designed black kit but both teams felt they had done Mr Sherman proud.

Around 100 people turned out for the memorial game and Simon Church from the club said everyone felt it was a fitting tribute to Mr Sherman who died in 2014 aged 22 after an accident on his motorbike in Devizes as he drove to work.

Mr Church said: "Charlie would have been proud at the way that the Charlie’s Angels team made up of members of Devizes Hockey Club that he played alongside, battled against the more experienced mostly ex first team players The Legends.

"James Taylor led Charlie’s Angels out to a rousing ovation from the 100 strong crowd and showed steely determination on the pitch managing not only to stop an aerial shot which was on target but also scoring a goal in the third quarter.

"Rory Sherman also deserved a mention for his outstanding performance and doing his team and brother proud by scoring a from a darting run from deep in his own half. The third goal scored by the Angels was claimed by James’s brother Tom."

The final score was 5-3 to the Legends who were captained by Sam Gaiger. The team's goals game from Charlie Doel, Grant Humphries and a hat trick by Matt Philpott.

Goalkeeper Aaron Holloway was named man of the match.

Mr Sherman's father Nick and his brother Rory were presented with playing shirts at the end of the match and they were invited to become honorary Legends.

Before the match a spokesman for the hockey club said: "It has a strong sense of family, this is because such a wide range of people of all different ages are involved in all aspects of the club.

"The Sherman family promoted this ideal fully and helped in all aspects of the club’s running and well being. They still attend on a regular basis; even though since the loss of Charlie this must have been hugely difficult for them. Charlie loved playing hockey and it was something they all loved doing together."

At the time of his death Mr Sherman of Hillier Road, Devizes worked as a mechanical engineer for DTR VMS Limited at the White Horse Business Park, Trowbridge.

He was travelling there along Bath Road, Devizes when the accident happened and he lost control and collided with a bus.

After his death his parents Nick and Anna described him as a one in a million and told of how he and his brother, Rory, spent six months making costumes of characters from Star Wars to attend a Comic Convention at Earls Court, London.
