GRANDMOTHER Maggie Moore, who a year ago was unable to take part in the Great North Run as she had broken her hip, made up for it on Sunday when she crossed the finish line in two hours 35 minutes.

Mrs Moore, 65, has raised more than £1,000 for Rowdeford School, near Devizes, by completing the half marathon distance in a race which attracted 57,000 runners including Mo Farah.

She finished 444th in her age category of female runners aged 65 and over. Mrs Moore from Cherhill, near Calne, is a trustee of the Rowdeford Charity which is fundraising for an outdoor learning centre at the school which caters for children with complex learning disabilities.

She said: "It was my fifth time doing the Great North Run. I as wasn't able to run last year as I broke my hip 21 months ago and spent three months on crutches.

"The Great North Run is a fantastic race and the largest charity fund raising event in the world. Really well organised, lovely people, with thousands of charities represented.

"The worst bit of the race is the middle as all the runners are reduced to running on one side of a dual carriageway and it gets very congested. You can only run at the sped of everybody round you.

"The best bit was running through a shower tunnel provided by the local fire brigade.

"I only saw Mo on on the screen. He was nearly finished before I even reached the start line 40 minutes later."
