EVERYTHING from a bearded dragon lizard to an Anglo Saxon warrior were at Devizes School on Monday to help students decide their career path.

The lizard was part of Wiltshire College's stand promoting its animal care course while the ancient soldier came courtesy of Wiltshire Museum.

Vaughan's Kitchen employees also made sure of plenty of visitors as they were tossing pancakes on their stall.

The third Devizes School careers fair attracted 25 local and national employers and both the main and small hall were transformed with banners, posters and displays as companies vied to grab the students attention.

Careers co-ordinator Hilary Hampton said: "A range of local and national employers were welcomed to the school, as well as colleges, voluntary and training providers. Many were visiting for the first time.

"We found three employers - Cross Manufacturing, Gough’s solicitors and Specsavers had sneaked in some of our ex- pupils, who were all enjoying their career paths working with local companies."

Devizes deputy mayor Nigel Carter and school headteacher Phil Bevan toured the stands and spent time chatting with employers and students. School governors and staff also dropped in to see the sort of job opportunities and further education courses that were on offer to the students.

Pupils from both year 10 and 12 were given the chance to browse the stalls and talk to prospective employers. Ms Hampton said: "As part of the afternoon sessions, the year 10 students also took part in a careers workshop.

"We were pleased to welcome four volunteers from Barclays Life skills programme who helped the students build on their self-confidence – an important asset for any career path.

"The event was enjoyed by students and employers alike and many positive comments have been received from both. We would like to thank all the organisations that gave their time to offer this opportunity to our students A positive step towards building their futures."

Among those who found the event beneficial was one Year 10 pupil who said: "It was very effective to have so many careers in one place and it was good to get involved with activities at the stands."
