DEVIZES and surrounding villages were hit by patriotic fever as people of all ages helped the Queen celebrate her 90th birthday over three days of fun and frolics.

In Bromham the whole village was invited to party at St Nicholas Primary School on Friday. The festivities started with the school's own version of Bake Off with Devizes chef Peter Vaughan playing the part of Paul Hollywood but with a lot more smiles.

Later in the day the children and staff decorated the school in red, white and blue and even created a Buggingham Palace insect hotel with a cardboard cut-out of the Queen,

Headteacher Hilary MacMeekin said: "It was a brilliant day. In the morning the bake off had entrants from across the village. Peter Vaughan came in to judge, but there were too many delicious entries and he had to recruit two of our year 6 children as additional judges to make the final decisions.

"The oldest children in the school organised a range of activities to raise money for the Syrian families moving to Wiltshire to provide a welcome box for them. These included crafts they had made, cakes to sell, bookmarks and a raffle."

Villagers later enjoyed tea and cakes and watched children perform. Mrs MacMeekin said: "The children are not only incredibly talented, singers and musicians, but I was so proud of how confident they were to stand up in front of parents, the school and people from the village to perform. The rain just about managed to stay away long enough to finish the performances."

On Saturday both Market Lavington and Potterne held fetes with a royal theme. In Lavington the village centre was transformed with flags and bunting as around 1,000 people joined in the day which included music events, craft stalls and a treasure hunt led by a pirate called Lantern Jack.

Organiser Derek Moore said: "It all went incredibly well and we only had a couple of brief showers. There was lots of support from locals and we hope having a fete in the centre of the village will become an annual event."

Included in the entertainment was music by Market Lavington Community Band led by Mervyn Smith. Mr Smith is suffering from ill-health but he and his band put on a rousing performance.

There was a ballroom dance show led by Louise Cambourne while soprano Barbara Gompels soprano and mezzo soprano Paula Boyagis mezzo soprano sang a selection of well known operatic duets and solos accompanied by pianist Tim Charity.

In Potterne a fete titled The Right Royal Bash was held at George Day’s Field. Money for St Mary's Church was raised by stalls, sideshows, music and a hog roast.

On Sunday hundreds of people were at a free jazz concert in Hillworth Park, Devizes, to mark the royal celebration.

Devizes Town Council's direct services manager Sarah Williams said: "It went very well and there was a great attendance. Fantasy Radio were brilliant hosts and everyone enjoyed themselves.

"It was a fitting start to our summer programme of music events."
