DEVIZES Mayor Jane Burton took on the Mary Berry role when a children's nursery staged its own Bake Off contest after being inspired by the town's food festival.

The pre-school children from Heathcote were split into four teams each led by a member of staff and had to make a Victoria sponge and decorate it.

Principal Stephanie Hill said: "The children enjoyed every element of the bake, from weighing the ingredients, taking turns mixing the batter, drawing a plan of their decorations and using the plan to decorate the cake ready for judging."

Mrs Burton and her husband Richard then judged the cakes. Ms Hill said: "Jane and Richard were lovely with the children, engaging in conversation with the children about her Mayor dress as well as the baking activities the children had been enjoying.

"The children thoroughly enjoyed the food festival inspired day and as well as taking a slice of cake home to share with their families they enjoyed a taste at snack time.

"The day was a real success with the children having a great time, working well in teams and demonstrating the three characteristics of learning."
