NEARLY 5,000 people braved the mud and the rain to rock it out at the Concert At The Kings yesterday.

For the past four years t-shirts and sun screen have been the order of the day in All Cannings for Rock Against Cancer but yesterday these were swapped for umbrellas and wellies.

But that did not stop the sell-out crowd from getting down and dirty with the likes of Suzi Quatro, 10CC the SAS band, Big Country and Marmalade.

For Nedd Callis the son of one of the three founders John 'Grubby' Callis it was a day to remember as he took to the stage in front of a sea of people to have his long hair cut to help raise money for charity.

Nedd, 11, was left almost bald after he braved the clippers but said: "I am glad I did it. It feels a bit strange now. I had been growing it for three years."

He was not the only member of the Callis family getting in on the act. His sister Bertie, 13, was on the introducing stage with friend and fellow Pewsey Vale pupil Haydn Spicer, 16, as they performed at Haydn B.

She said: "We were a bit scared as we have hardly performed together in public before."

But most of the acts performing in the small village near Devizes had decades of experience of getting crowds to boogie to their music and they encouraged the crowd to forget the weather and enjoy the experience.
