CHILDREN who wanted to show a dedicated teacher, who is battling breast cancer, how much they care have raised £1,000 for Cancer Research from their own version of Race For Life.

Emma Camacho, who works as an intervention teacher at Chirton Primary School, near Devizes, was diagnosed in October.

She is still receiving treatment to beat the disease but has stayed in touch with pupils and sent a card and treats for year six children who have just finished their SAT tests.

Headteacher Amy Bekker-Wrench said: "Emma has been instrumental in helping to move the school forward to the success it is today.

"The whole school community wanted to do something special to show Emma our support so we came up with the idea of completing our very own Race for Life.

"The key stage two children completed 10 laps of our well-sized school field with key stage one completing five laps.

"There was a little treat waiting for them at the end of each lap to provide some much needed energy."

To make the race more official the children were all given a race number which they decorated with special messages personal to them and in support of Mrs Camacho.

Ms Bekker-Wrench said: "As ever, I was incredibly proud of each and every child who once again demonstrated their compassion for others, underpinning our school values and motto of being The Little School With A Big Heart.

"I must also send my sincere thanks to my wonderful team and in particular teacher ChrisParmenter who organised the whole event.

"We were truly overwhelmed by the number of donations that continued to pour in so thank everyone who helped us to reach such a superb figure.

"We now very much look forward to welcoming Mrs Camacho back in the not so distant future when she has returned to full health."

A cheque for £1,000 was presented to Michelle Leighton from Cancer Research on Friday.
