YOUNGSTERS at two village schools were in patriotic mood on Friday as they held their own celebrations to mark the Queen's 90th birthday.

At Rowde Academy, near Devizes, a traditional street party was held for all the children and staff along with guests from Rowde and nearby Poulshot.

A fish and chip lunch was followed by songs from the Rowde choir, Morris dancing and the singing of the national anthem.

Acting headteacher Christine Fox said: "The children and staff went to tremendous effort and were either dressed as royalty or were wearing red, white and blue.

"After lots of flag waving, dancing and singing the afternoon ended with the children talking to the visitors; many of whom have lived in the villages all their lives and remember the old Rowde and Poulshot school sites.

"Having members of the Rowde and Poulshot community share this event with the staff and children was so important as we could create and share this memory together."

The school governors prepared the playground with Union Flag bunting and the kitchen staff had decorated the tables for the children, staff and guests.

The Reverend John Rees from St. Matthew's church Rowde spoke to the children and guests about how dedicated and inspirational the Queen has been during her reign and how everyone can all learn from her resilience and loyalty.

Pupil Charlie said that it was so much fun for the children to wear crowns. Amelia from year six said: "'It was really good to see people from Rowde and Poulshot and to talk to them." Thalia said: "We could get to know people that we had never met before and talk about our school."

Children in Chilton Foliat near Marlborough also staged a special birthday party in honour of the Queen.
