TRAVELLERS have set up home in Station Road car park in Devizes.

A fleet of caravans arrived in the long stay section of the car park on Friday night and have taken over most of the parking spaces.

Deputy mayor Nigel Carter has contacted Wiltshire Council and hopes the travellers will be made to leave as soon as possible. He has heard that they may hope to stay until Wednesday or Thursday.

He said: "Large sections of the Station Road long stay car park were occupied by travellers on Friday evening/Saturday morning. Initial reconnaissance suggests that they were intent upon staying until Wednesday or Thursday.

"I have advised Philip Whitehead and action now lies with County Hall. Meanwhile, parking is severely restricted with a consequential loss of revenue."

A spokesman for Wiltshire Council said it would be working with the police to get the travellers removed from the car park as soon as possible.
