CHILDREN at a school in Africa are now hitting all the right notes thanks to fundraising by children from a village school near Devizes.

Pupils from Dauntsey Academy Primary School, West Lavington, hosted a Night At The Musicals to raise funds for youngsters in Africa and now they have been delighted to receive a letter of thanks and photographs.

A total of £350 was raised to buy instruments for the Child Of Hope School in Uganda so they can make music of their own. The letter from the school said: "We are excited to show off our new musical instruments. Music and dance are very much an integral part of Ugandan culture and we were desperate to get more instruments in order to expand and motivate our musicians.

"UK school Dauntsey Academy Primary School in Wiltshire answered our prayers by raising funds for us. We sent off Joseph (our operations manager) to Jinja to find the instruments as they are not made in our town, Mbale.

"We were absolutely delighted when he came back with a brand new huge xylophone, drums, harps, pipes, shakers and more dancing skirts. Even the staff got excited and joined in, although judging by the noise, more practice is required! Many thanks again to Laura Scott and all at Dauntsey Academy Primary School for making this happen for us."

Back in February Dauntsey primary children took part in the musical evening which also featured guest stars Ben Kerr and Josie McBrine.

Teacher Laura Scott, who runs a music club at the school, organised the concert after she spent time last summer teaching at the Ugandan School and realised they had a love of music but few instruments.

She said: "The evening was a huge success and comments from the audience were amazing." She thanked everyone who helped raise the cash to buy the instruments.
