TEAMS of women from Devizes and Marlborough are preparing to trek across London in their bras this weekend to raise money for breast cancer research.

Kirsten Weir, 23, and Emily Wainwright, 24, who work at the Police Headquarters in Devizes plus a group of 16 from Marlborough will be among thousands covering the 26.2 mile route of the Moonwalk.

Both of the Devizes women work for the Horizon and Witness Liaison Unit were inspired to take part after Miss Weir's mother Kim, 54, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. Miss Weir said: "She underwent surgery and radiotherapy and has since been told this treatment has been successful although she will still be on medication for the next five years until she gets the final all clear.

“We have been training following a plan provided by the charity and completed our last training walk the Saturday just gone where we walked 23 miles from Devizes to Bath. We have been regularly walking from Devizes to Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon and more.”

Whilst fundraising the two women have received support from their colleagues at the Police HQ from cake sales and raffles.

Their fundraising total so far stands at just under £800.

In Marlborough Melanie Duncan, 47, of Herd Street, is leading a group of 16 tackling their first Moonwalk.

Mrs Duncan said: “We all fancied the challenge and wanted to do something for such a wonderful cause so we thought walking 26 miles in London in our decorated bras. The 16 of us are from Marlborough and we also have five or six people joining us from around country.

"We have done a lot of training walks, this week we have been winding down to prepare for Saturday. We are hoping to finish the walk in seven and a half hours.”

The group of women have already raised over £3,000 between them, with hopes that they will get a boost in their funding.

“To date we have raised £3,200 between us, none of us have had breast cancer but our lives have been touched by people that have. We all know each other through our children and we are a good group of friends. It is great to come together to raise money for such a worthy cause,” added Mrs Duncan.
