A WOMAN from Devizes was thrown an early birthday party to celebrate her centenary at the Crown Centre in the town.

Georgina Smith spent last Wednesday afternoon sitting down to a roast beef dinner with friends to mark the past century of her life. Born on April 23, Georgina was named in celebration of St George.

Sam Wilson, member of staff at the Crown Centre in St John’s Street, said: “She really enjoyed it, she is ecstatic to be turning 100. In particular she is really looking forward to receiving her card from the Queen.”

Mrs Smith, a great grandmother, moved to Devizes 70 years ago when her and her husband Alan, a civil servant, decided to relocate from Bournemouth. After moving to the town for three years, Mr Smith was posted to Germany, where the couple lived for three years before returning to Devizes.

The couple had two daughters, Carol who is 74, and Joan who is 62, who then blessed Mr and Mrs Smith with four grandchildren and a recent addition of a great granddaughter.

During her time in Devizes, Mrs Smith worked at the Slopers store in the fashion department, originally believing the job to be for one Christmas, which turned into a full-time occupation.

Also known as being one of the church wardens for St Mary’s Church in New Park Street, Mrs Smith became well known in the area.
