CAMPAIGNERS worried about a narrow path that links two villages near Devizes have welcomed the intervention of Dauntsey's School.

The independent school stepped in to carry out work on the pavement between West Lavington and Market Lavington where an earth bank has spread on to the path.

But butcher Mark Douse, who is leading the campaign, says the fight will go on to get the kerb repaired and to lower the speed limit. Mr Douse said: "Ground staff from Dauntsey school began re-instating the footway to its full width last week and I believe that this will be completed this week."

He is now planning to write to the school asking if it will consider installing a wooden post or sleeper barrier along the footway. Mr Douse said: "This would prevent spoil from falling onto the surface permanently, and stop nettle growth reducing the width in summer months. If they are not willing to do so, I will suggest if the clearance of the bank spoil from the footway, may be placed on a six monthly works schedule."

Wiltshire councillor Richard Gamble said he understood the bank was the responsibility of the school and he welcomed the work being carried out.

Mr Douse is also to press ahead with trying to get Wiltshire Council to deal with the crumbing and uneven path, low kerb and speed of motorists. He said he wanted to be able to contact the area highways engineer responsible for dealing with the path but so far had not been able to do so.
