MUM Julia Tugwell, who two years ago was diagnosed with cervical cancer, is to cycle 100 km through London to raise awareness of the disease.

Mrs Tugwell, from Devizes, has spoken of her own battle with the illness as part of Cervical Cancer Prevention Week which runs until this weekend (30).

She is an ambassador for the charity Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust.

The mum of one has been in remission for a year but just before Christmas 2013 she was diagnosed with stage two cancer. She was a self-confessed smear dodger and did not go to her GP until she noticed bleeding after sex.

Mrs Tugwell, 44, had a radical hysterectomy in January 2014 but is now training for the bike ride. She said: "It was an emotional time, but with support of the medical team, who were absolute gems and online peers from Jo’s Trust forum, everything was made that little bit easier.

“When you get cancer in the 21st century the internet becomes your source of information and support. I’ve made some fantastic cancer buddies. We’ve exchanged messages, hopes, fears, cards, love and support.”

In July last year, despite not owning a bike, Julia decided to sign up to Women V Cancer Ride the Night. She shares her thoughts and progress on her blog Hello Vera Juice.

She wrote: “I’ve signed up for Ride the Night! This is crazy as I am fat, 44 and unfit.”

She is fundraising for Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and can be supported by going to justgiving.com/Juliatugwellridethenight2016.

The ride will also support Breast Cancer Caret and Ovarian Cancer Action.
