POLICE used a stinger device to stop a car in London Road, Devizes this afternoon.

Two offenders were arrested at the scene but a third fled and a dog team and helicopter were brought in to join the search.

People living near the scene said there was a heavy police presence in the area and patrol cars from several areas were called in.

It is believed the car which was pursued by police after it was found not to have insurance joined London Road from Conscience Lane in Rowde.

Wiltshire police issued a statement saying: "To anyone concerned about the the seemingly large number of police vehicles responding with blue lights and sirens in Devizes rest assured that there was no threat to the public.

"Police had been involved in the a pursuit with a vehicle which was promptly and safely immobilised by deployment of a stinger."
