A 33-year-old man from Devizes has been charged with robbery following the incident in Snuff Street on Monday in which a woman in her 80s suffered a suspected broken hip.

He has been remanded in custody. Police say they are not naming the man at the moment 'due to operational issues'.

The woman from Devizes was walking along the street at about 3pm when a man on a bicycle snatched her handbag causing her to fall. The suspect then rode off.

She is believed to be in a stable condition in the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

Detective Sergeant Nicky Caffrey from Wiltshire Police said: “As this is a nasty robbery we are still appealing for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious, taking place in Snuff Street on Monday afternoon, to come forward to help us with our enquiries.

“If you saw the offence or anyone riding away from the scene of the crime please call me, DS Nicky Caffrey, on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
