THERE were thrills and spills and some super human effort in a village near Devizes on Sunday evening as a soapbox derby was staged in the High Street.

Among those competing in the Great Cheverell Soapbox derby were retired upholsterer Barry Gingham, 70, and his ten-year-old grandson Sam Gingham-Smith.

They made their own kart to look like a Formula One racing car through the summer holidays and they showed good speed as they raced down the village hill.

Other competitors dressed to impress including one team that wore Batman costumes. Tom Dudman, Matt Dudman and Matt Leflem all wore their bat outfits as they took to the slope outside The Bell pub.

A team with a cricket theme included driver Nicola Jennings, Sam Gaiger and David Lloyd.

There were a number of family efforts of father and son and daughter and dad competing in the race which had four categories.

Villagers and team supporters lined the High Street to cheer on their favourites.

The event was raising money for Pancreatic Cancer UK, Dorothy House and the British Heart Foundation.
