DEVOTED grandson Adam Davis has taken part in a Brave The Shave fundraiser for Macmillan in memory of Keith and Olive Hopper who died last year in the space of just two weeks.

On Friday Mr Davis, 28, of Anzio road, Devizes had his head shaved at Mikey' s Barbers in Devizes Market Place and has already raised more than £300 for the charity.

He was watched by family members and friends including mum Jacqueline Davis and sister Sophie. His mum said: "Adam was very close to his grandparents and wanted to do something for Macmillan as they were very good to us last year.

"The deaths of my mum and dad so close to each other was a terrible shock for all of us. We are all very proud of Adam. His hair was quite long and now he is completely bald."

Mr Davis, who works as a driver for the NHS, is a regular at the barber shop in the old Gazette & Herald building. Barber Mike Harford wielded first the scissors and then a razor to complete the transformation.

Mr and Mrs Hopper of Mayenne Place, Devizes, who had been married for 55 years had three children, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr Hopper, 75, and his 74-year-old wife were married on March 14, 1959 at Devizes Register Office. They had met at a dance not long after Mr Hopper, who grew up in Hull, was posted to Devizes for his National Service.

He was one of a number of talented footballers recruited from the Army Pay Corps by Devizes Football Club. Mr Hopper played alongside World Cup hero Roger Hunt. In one match in the late 1950s against Westbury Mr Hopper’s team won 6-0 with him scoring all six goals.

Mrs Hopper was born in Devizes and grew up in Kingsley Gardens. She worked as a nursing assistant at the old Roundway Hospital and later for Wadworth Brewery. She died on April 23, 2014, eight weeks after being diagnosed with lung cancer and her husband died two weeks later.
