YOUNGSTERS at a Devizes infants school have been getting crafty... but all in a good cause.

The children at Southbroom Infants have created a mosaic mural on a playground wall and have also been taking part in the National Gallery's Take One Picture event.

Headteacher Caroline Jackson said: "We decided that their playground school wall needed brightening up. The answer came in the form of a school mosaic based on the school’s animal class names and the iconic Kennet and Avon canal.

"Led by teacher and artist Jenny Crowe and ably supported by the entire staff, every child contributed to this huge work of art measuring around seven metres in length.

"The mosaic wouldn’t have been possible without the sponsorship of the Devizes Decorative and Fine Arts Group who promote art participation in local schools."

The group funded a mosaic workshop with local artist, Emma Leith, and assisted with some of the material costs. Children and parents can now see the completed mosaic as they enter school every morning.

The school also took part in a creative week and used a painting by Thomas Gainsborough called Mr and Mrs Andrews for inspiration.

Nigel Andrews, the head of Southbroom St James Academy, and Helen Wuscher, from the Northgate Theatre Company in Devizes, dressed up to bring the portrait to life.

Every pupil then spent the week researching the picture and created a range of work which went of show for parents and governors.
