WHEN Summer Hopkins was asked what she wanted to do to celebrate her 11th birthday she knew she wanted to help others.

She came up with the idea of a disco but told her parents James and Clare Hopkins that she did not want her friends to bring presents but instead to donate to Dorothy House Hospice.

A total of £215.70 was raised for the hospice at Winsely, near Bradford on Avon that provides respite care and a hospice at home service.

Mr Hopkins, who runs Devizes Fine Kitchens with his father Bruce, said: "She picked this charity as it helps people who are suffering with cancer and their families to be able to stay in their own homes and have nurses go in and help them and their families to cope with cancer.

"I thought it was a wonderful thing for her to think about at her age. She is really a selfless little girl who likes to think about others."

Summer from Nursteed Village, near Devizes, was joined by her sister Madison, 13, and friends at Devizes Football Club where they danced to music played by Stealth Road House and enjoyed a photo booth.

Mr Hopkins said: "The children really enjoyed dancing dressing up and having their photos taken."

But this was not the end to Summer's charity enterprise. She has also donated her hair to help make wigs for children suffering hair loss during cancer treatment.

Mr Hopkins said: "She was very pleased when having her long hair cut to a shorter style and hairdresser at Diffusion suggested she donate to a charity that uses hair to make wigs.

"It is something she wanted to do but didn’t think it was long enough to donate."

Summer will be starting at Devizes School in September.
