POUNDLAND is set to open in the old Tesco store in Devizes next week, but company bosses are still refusing to admit they are coming to the town.

Last week Poundland still said it was unable to confirm it had taken over the former supermarket in Maryport Street just hours before huge signs went up on its frontage.

This week, as workmen were busy refitting and decorating the downstairs of the building, a spokesman for the company said: “Once again I’m unable to provide any further information at the moment. If and when we are able to share further information on the Devizes store, I’ll ensure you receive it. Thanks for your patience on this matter.”

But it is understood the cut price store will open next Thursday and sales staff are ready to take up their positions.

Poundland has repeatedly refused to admit it was opening in Devizes even though advertisements for staff first appeared in the window of the shop in April.

Civic leaders have welcomed the speedy letting of the former supermarket which closed on April 4 with the loss of 60 jobs.

There were fears the landmark site could be left boarded up for months or even years.

But strangely Poundland has not wanted to advertise its arrival, in contrast to the arrival of Tesco in Devizes 45 years ago when there were scantily-dressed models, DJ David Jacobs and a man dressed in full armour doing the honours.
