PUB landlord Ian Wixon is hoping music questions will not be on the list when he takes part in TV's Pointless quiz show.

Mr Wixon, who runs the Southgate in Devizes, and regular Martin Armitage expect to film for the BBC 1 show within the next few weeks after passing auditions in Bristol.

Mr Wixon, 50, said: "I am dreading music coming up as I am hopeless at that. I would say geography is my best subject.

"But Martin is a regular in the pub quizzes here and I think he will be quite strong all round."

The two men spent a day at a hotel in Bristol in April taking part in a hectic round of screen tests and quizzing.

Mr Wixon said: "One of the researchers told me that they had about 10,000 applicants and 1,500 were called to auditions. Out of those they were looking for 200 couples so I really didn't expect us to get through.

"But we heard about ten days later that they wanted us and now we are just waiting to find out when we will go to Elstree for the filming. It will be some time in June or July."

Mr Wixon only got involved by chance when he heard Mr Armitage trying to persuade other pub regulars to join him in applying.

He said: "No-one else wanted to do it but I said I would give it a go. I always watch the programme as it is on in the early evening when I get my break from behind the bar and I go upstairs to have my tea."

The show unlike other quizzes rewards contestants for getting the fewest possible points. Those taking part have to try and find the most obscure answer to a question in the hope that no-one else will have chosen it and so it becomes a pointless answer.

It is hosted by actor and presenter Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman.

When Mr Wixon and Mr Armitage, of Sarum Drive, Devizes, go to Elstree they will spend two days at the studios as a number of episodes are filmed one after another.

Their part in the show is likely to be aired in December or January.
