SPORTS fans will be on the starting blocks to bid for goods such as a Usain Bolt shirt when a charity night is held near Devizes.

The 25th annual sportsman's dinner organised by Ed Davies, of Bishops Cannings Cricket Club, is to be held at Dauntsey's School, West Lavington on May 27.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan is guest speaker and will supported by rugby player Doddie Weir and MC Roger Daikin.

Money raised from the auction will go to Devizes Opportunity Centre while other profits will be used to help the club and its junior teams.

Mr Davies, 65, of Church Walk, Bishops Cannings, was was awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours for his fundraising and work with village cricket and shared the news of his honour only with his teacher wife Gill when he received a letter before Christmas.

Mr Davies said at the time: "It is always nice to be told you have done well at something, but to be honest I was a bit embarrassed.

"There are lots of other people who are involved in the cricket club and have helped with the fundraising.”

This year will be the 25th running of the sportsman’s dinner he organises as the club’s own main fundraiser.

He said: "The sportsman’s dinner has found a bit of a niche in the market and now makes about £9,000 in profit each year, which pays for the upkeep of the club."

He was presented with his BEM last month at a ceremony in the chapel at Bowood by Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire Sarah Troughton. Lord and Lady Lansdowne were both in attendance.

Mr Davies said: "It was an honour to receive the award. It was a beautiful setting for the ceremony."
