BUDDING young authors at St Barnabas Primary School in Market Lavington were given an insight into the life of a writer at the end of last month when children’s author Eileen Browne visited the school.

Reception and Year 1 pupils in Silbury class enjoyed the chance to wear African headdresses on April 17 when they greeted Ms Browne.

The author and illustrator, who is best known for children's books Handa's Hen, Handa's Surprise and the Witch's Funny Bone, spent a morning at the school as part of a topic on different cultures.

She read from Handa’s Surprise, a story about a Kenyan Girl, and told the class how she learnt to draw animals by studying them at London Zoo.

Assistant headteacher, Lindsay Clough, said: “The children really enjoyed listening to Eileen share stories and facts about her work. The children’s experience of the day enhanced their learning and understanding of how to construct and illustrate creative stories.

“They were in awe of her and the visit has inspired them to want to be authors in the future.”

The former teacher then finished the session by amazing the children with a colourful drawing of a giraffe.
