WALTER Rose & Son have just been voted one of the top three suppliers of sirloin steak in the country but just missed out on claiming the top spot.

The Devizes and Trowbridge based butchers received a highly commended at an awards ceremony last week for its Sirloin Steak in the first EBLEX Quality Standard Mark Excellence Awards.

Partner Steve Cook, who has been a butcher for almost 40 years, said it’s the result of generations of patient work, liaising with local farmers to develop the right breed and the best feeding and welfare regimes.

He said: “To have reached the final in such an important competition is a great tribute to everybody involved, from the farmers that supply us to our staff here who look after and monitor the carcass until it is in absolutely prime condition and then to our butchers who understand the importance of cutting the meat so precisely, a genuine team effort.”

EBLEX, a division of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, ran the awards with entries judged on set criteria including aroma, flavour and tenderness.

Walter Rose & Son’s Highly Commended came in the Food Service section of the competition and with pub operator Mitchells & Butlers winning the category and independent butcher Owen Taylor & Sons, in Alfreton, Derbyshire, being the overall winner.
