THIS old photograph, originally printed in a local newspaper in the late 1940s, has been sent in by Andrea Button, of Southgate Close, Devizes.
It records the opening of the first post-war council house in Devizes, showing councillors, and council officials of the period.
These comprise of, from left, Mrs Elsie Proudman, who was Mayor of Devizes in 1956; Leon Burn, a councillor and jeweller; John Chandler, Mayor of Devizes at the time; Archibald Hodge, town clerk; Harry Smith, a councillor and Mrs Proudman's father; Frank Eden, a councillor and landlord of the Black Horse on Bath Road; Dr Waylen, medical officer for health, Mr Cheasby, borough surveyor; and James 'Ellie' Hopkins, borough treasurer and housing officer, and Mrs Button's father.
Mrs Button said: "Although I have identified the people, I do not know the year the photograpgh was taken or the location of the council house.
"I would imagine that older Devizes residents would be interested in this photo and it would generate some interest about the event."
