VETERAN broadcaster made friends wherever he went as he filmed in Devizes for a new food programme.

Sir Terry had time to stop and share a joke with the many people who were in town for market day on Thursday.

He popped into a number of businesses to film traditional food with history attached and then went walkabout in the Market Place to the delight of passers-by.

Fan Teresa Perry from Wroughton was amazed to see Sir Terry on her very first visit to Devizes. She said: "I could not believe it.

"He was lovely, it's made my day. I'm not going to wash my hands for a week."

Sir Terry said: "We have loved Devizes. It is a great market town. We have seen plenty of hogs and we have had a great British breakfast in The Bear."

Butcher Steve Cook of Walter Rose and Son had been expecting to talk about old-fashioned cuts of meat and traditional pies but instead Sir Terry was fascinated how the business had managed to flourish for four generations.

Mr Cook said: "He was fantastic. I have been a fan for many years. He had time to chat to the customers and all my team. He bought some black pudding and I told him a joke. I also said how making a business like this work is all about very long hours but they will probably cut that bit."

Amelia Chapman and her sister Florence Heaton-Renshaw, who run the Black Swan, Devizes, were also charmed by the entertainer.

Mrs Chapman said: "He was great. He was with us for a couple of hours and tried a traditional meat pie made with pig's head that Florence had made."

Also on his tour was The Bear Hotel where he enjoyed a traditional full-English breakfast including black pudding which made him want to buy some from Walter Rose.

He also sampled traditional Devizes Cheescake made by Giovanni Campanella who stood in after fellow chef Peter Vaughan had another commitment on the day of filming. Mr Campanella who runs Dolicipani in Old Swan Yard regularly makes the Witlshire favourite from a traditional recipe.

Sir Terry, 76, also met market stall holder Ceri Cryer from Brinkworth Dairy.

Mrs Cryer said: "It's really exciting but I can't tell you anything about it.

"He was really lovely and its a fantastic opportunity to share with a wider audience the details of the fantastic produce a Brinkworth Dairy."
