When Devizes town councillors debated plans to revamp the inside of an indoor market in Devizes, it ended in a bit of a shambles.
Some thought the Wiltshire Council plan to spend £140,000 on creating individual units at The Shambles had already been debated in depth at previous meetings and approved, leaving nothing left to discuss.
But when Devizes Guardian Nigel Carter initially proposed that the council should back the project, he met fierce opposition from fellow Guardian Jane Burton and she took umbrage when he accused her of wavering.
She said: “I am not one for wavering. I have always been against this plan and will be voting against it.”
Coun Andy Geddes said he too had originally been against the scheme as he believed it was not welcome by a number of traders but, as the council had already agreed it in principle, he would not now object.
Coun Andy Johnson said he had always been in favour of the scheme. He said: “I think this is an excellent opportunity for small business in the town and we should support it.”
Finally, after much debate, Coun Carter decided not to take a vote and conceded to general opinion that the council should ask for more clarification from Wiltshire Council on the exact layout of the units.
