Hundreds had a flipping good time in Devizes, when they took part in Shrove Tuesday pancake races.

Now in its eighth year the event, organised by Age UK Wiltshire, raised more than £470 for the charity and had 120 children and 30 adults taking part.

The free event was held in Hillworth Park, because of coinciding with the schools’ half term holiday, and Age UK Wiltshire chief executive Brian Deeley said he was pleased so many people had supported the event.

He said: “This year’s races have been exceptionally well attended and we had XX people involved in the races.

“Being in Hillworth Park has made it a more relaxed event compared to being in the Market Place.”

The Black Swan Hotel provided the pancakes and members of Devizes Rotary Club helped to run the event.

The Gazette & Herald entered a team in the business race and came home a close second to Goughs Solicitors.

Abigail Collier, eight, who won the age seven to eight race, said: “I am shocked that I won, as when I do running at school the boys normally beat me.

“I almost lost my pancake, but luckily I caught it in time.”

Devizes Mayor Sarah Bridewell gave out prizes to the winners, with the children receiving a certificate.

She said: “What a fantastic fundraising day, with so many people turning up to support the event in its new location.

“I think this has been the biggest year yet, and hope the Devizes pancake races stay firmly on the calendar for years to come.”

All profits from the day will go to Devizes-based Age UK Wiltshire, to support its work providing information and advice, practical help, support and friendship to thousands of older people in the county.
