PANCAKE tossing is being practised across Devizes as the town gears up for this year’s pancake races.

Now in its eighth year, the races – organised by Age UK Wiltshire – will be held on Shrove Tuesday, February 17, with the series of relay races starting at noon.

The free event is being held in Hillworth Park this year because of half term and Age UK Wiltshire chief executive Brian Deeley is hoping that lots of people will roll up to take part.

He said: “Demand for our services is high and we rely on public support and fundraising to help us to maintain those services. This event has become a well-supported and enjoyable part of the Devizes events calendar and we hope that people will come along and enjoy the races, taste a pancake and offer a donation to help support our work.”

All ages are welcomed, with many schools and businesses encouraged to join the fun, and fancy dress is optional.

As in previous years, the Gazette will be entering a team, with our Devizes reporters Joanne Moore and Rachel Barr and our Calne reporter Andrew Lawton flying the flag for the newspaper.

The Black Swan Hotel will be providing the pancakes and members of Devizes Rotary Club will be helping to run the event. Hot pancakes, Easter chicks and cakes will also be on sale.

Profits will go to Age UK Wiltshire to support its work providing information and advice, practical help, support and friendship to thousands of older people in the county.
