Four friends have taken on the charity challenge of driving 3,000 miles across Europe in just four days.

Eddie Timms, Fred Coombs, James McCubbin and Max Gatley, all originally from Devizes, have decided to take part in the 10th Scumrun charity driving event in May.

It is professionally filmed and broadcast across the world, including on Sky in the UK, with money from this year’s event going to JDRF, a type one diabetes charity.

Trainee teacher Mr Coombs has been the main organiser of the team, who are calling themselves the Inglorious Bustards, after Wiltshire’s county bird, the great bustard.

Guidelines for the event are to raise more than £500 for the charity, spend less than £500 on a car and drive it across Europe in little more than half a week.

The group brought a 15-year-old green Volvo V70 TDI for £400 and have spent the last three months refurbishing it with a Wiltshire theme.

They have got companies in the area to help them prepare, which included Wiltshire and Bustard-themed stickers for the car along with getting it roadworthy.

Mr Coombs said: “This is the first big fundraising project we have undertaken as a foursome and it is really exciting to see how willing companies are to help four men and a slightly unloved Volvo.

The four, all in their mid-20s, have been friends for more than 10 years, although Mr Gatley is the only one still living in Devizes.

Mr Coombs now lives in Bath, with Mr Timms and Mr McCubbin living in Poulshot and Stockley.
