Cubs used their motto – Be Prepared – to good effect on Saturday when they met a challenge to turn household waste into models of animals.

Youngsters from packs across mid-Wiltshire competed at the headquarters of 1st Devizes Scout Group on Saturday.

Cubs from Calne, Lacock and Market Lavington joined counterparts from Devizes and spent two hours perfecting their creations under the eye of assistant district commissioner Kate May.

She announced the challenge topic of animals and gave the teams 10 minutes to plan their model before one member collected the scrap they wanted from a huge pile.

An hour later the teams did a presentation explaining their models to eight judges.

Judges ruled the home pack of 1st Devizes, made up of Archie Pearce, Henry Davies, Aaron Cheung, Toby Harper, Joshua Sheridan, and Harry Burr, winners.

They built a small zoo, with a monkey enclosure incorporating a rope slide between two trees, and a monkey sliding from one tree to the other.

The pack will represent their district at the county competition at the County Scout Centre in Potterne on February 7.
