BROMHAM villagers have again turned out in force to voice their worries about plans for a gypsy site in the village.

Around 150 people met in the village social centre to speak out against the scheme to create a site for one family in a field in New Road.

The parish council has now used the views of the villagers to form their response to Wiltshire Council.

Villagers have voted unanimously to oppose plans for a static home with a day room and space for a touring caravan, septic tank and parking.

But there are fears that as Wiltshire Council has not yet allocated enough places for gypsies and travellers in its core strategy, it may be forced to allow the plan.

Parish council chairman Peter Paget said: “What I would like to know is what exactly constitutes a traveller or a gypsy?

"If you can just say you are a traveller anyone who wanted to put up a building could just say they fit the category and get planning permission.”

The parish council has pledged to fight the proposal and, if the plan was to go to appeal, to pay for its own expert to put forward the village’s case.

Parish councillor Pam Thomas said that people were worried that if the application for one static caravan was allowed there would be danger of the site expanding in the future.

Villagers say the field is outside of the area where development should be permitted.

Thurdleigh Planning said the application was on behalf of a gypsy family living in Semington.
