Devizes Decorative and Fine Arts Society launched its first church trail for children last week at All Saints Church in West Lavington.

Last Tuesday Devizes DFAS welcomed 48 seven to nine-year-olds from Dauntsey Academy Primary School to All Saints’ Church, West Lavington to take part in the first trail by the society.

School staff and members of Devizes DFAS helped the children with their trail, having fun finding out about the church and answering questions such as ‘where is the holy washing up done?’.

Stacey Bird, Alder class teacher, said: “It went really well and the children were very engaged.

“They also found it exciting that they were allowed to go anywhere in the church.”

After completing the trail, the children returned to school to learn more about what they had seen. The school is now looking into taking other groups to take part in the trail.

The society hopes that other groups as well as families will come to enjoy the trail and find out about the historic village church.

The trail guides visitors round the church looking at the architecture, history and furnishings with the aim to encourage people to explore and learn about the building, so that they are inspired to visit other churches.

Anji Scofield, church trail designer for Devizes DFAS, said: “I picked All Saints for the first trail as it is my local church and the one I know best.

“It was wonderful to see the children have so much fun learning about the building and its history.”

The trail can be completed at any time the church is open, with trail sheets available for people to use.
