The A361 out of Devizes on Caen Hill was closed for more than six hours last night after a collision between two cars.
Police were called at about 6.15pm after the collision between an Audi A4 and a Mercedes C200 Kompressor .
Wiltshire Fire and Rescue were called at 6.20pm and two crews from Devizes and Melksham attended.
Hydraulic rescue equipment was used to free a 45-year-old Trowbridge man from the Audi who was then taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol.
Police have said at present he is in a serious condition with life threatening injuries to his back and internally.
The 25-year-old driver of the Mercedes was not injured.
The road reopened at 1.10am on Friday after a police collision investigation team had complete its work.
