A popular village primary school has added a seventh classroom so it can cope with the number of youngsters who want to attend.

Wiltshire police and crime commissioner Angus Macpherson joined staff, governors and pupils of Dauntsey Academy in West Lavington, near Devizes, to declare the new room open.

Headteacher Robert Lakin said: “We are now able to offer seven classes covering each year group within the primary age phase. This is something unique to our academy within the local cluster of schools.

“The school has historically been oversubscribed and after gathering opinions of our whole school community, it was decided to research options that would enable the school to receive funding to extend provision.”

He said the move to academy status meant it could apply for money from the Academy Capital Maintenance Fund and he was delighted when they were successful.

The school also received funds to create a new drop-off and pick-up point for children. He said this had reduced traffic congestion and historical issues of haphazard parking.
