Rocker Steve Harley kept his word when he personally delivered one of his guitars to an All Cannings concert-goer who bid £10,000 for the instrument.

Harley wowed the crowd at the Concert at the Kings in May and then offered to auction off the guitar he was using that night.

He was so overwhelmed by the £10,000 bid, he offered not to just personally deliver it but to stay and perform a private gig as long as they lived within 150 miles of London.

The person who made the charity donation wanted to remain anonymous but included in the small gathering at their house was Cheryl Callis, wife of John ‘Grubby’ Callis, the sound engineer to Sir Paul McCartney, who helped to organise the All Cannings concert, near Devizes.

She said: “We were entertained with a set of acoustic Steve Harley songs accompanied by fellow band member Barry (Wickens) who played guitar and fiddle.

“We all enjoyed a curry supper before Steve and Barry went on to St Albans to stay before their next gig.”

After he came off stage in All Cannings where he had brought the house down with his final number Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me), which had reached number one in 1975, Harley said: “I will be glad to do a bit of a performance at someone’s house as long as they don’t invite too many guests.

“I did this once before and I ended up driving hundreds of miles to deliver it so I thought I better put a restriction on the distance. The crowd here was amazing.

“I think this is a fantastic cause and I want to do my bit. This doesn’t really cost me anything apart from my time.”

The £10,000 contributed to the total of £35,000 raised by this year’s concert. The money went to good causes in All Cannings, the Above and Beyond Bristol Hospital charity and Macmillan Cancer Support.

In the three years since the concerts started a total of £70,000 has been raised.
