Schoolgirl Olivia Fleming’s biggest wish came true when she swam with dolphins in Florida, just months after finishing leukaemia treatment.

Olivia, ten, of White Horse Way, Devizes, and her family were sent on the trip of a lifetime by the Make A Wish Foundation.

She was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2011, but has now been in remission for six months.

She was joined on the trip by mum Shona, dad Adrian, sister Emily, nine, and twin brothers Connor and Ashton, three.

Mrs Fleming said: “We were treated like royalty. Olivia had such an incredible time with the dolphins. She is even more fascinated by them now than she was before.”

Last week, when her school, St Joseph’s, had a dressing up day, she went as a dolphin trainer.

Olivia’s life has been a series of exciting challenges in recent weeks.

She also took part in an Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust sailing course, joining a group of 25 young people – all recovering from cancer – to crew five yachts around the Solent on a four-day adventure.

The course gives young people the chance to test themselves in a safe and supportive environment, encouraging them to work as a team and get involved in everything from helming the boat to cooking.

Olivia said: “I really enjoyed all the fun and games onboard, the speedboat was very exciting and I actually found the sailing quite easy and relaxing.”

The aim of the trust is to give youngsters a chance to rebuild confidence. After an initial trip, the trust invites children backannually until they are 18.
