The RSPCA's animal day and fun dog show proved a huge success, with animal lovers taking over the green in Devizes.

The Wiltshire Mid Branch held the annual event, in its third year, with charities and organisations in attendance to give help and advice.

Free services available on the day included micro-chipping of dogs and cats, small animal clinic provided by Macqueen’s Vets and a vouchers for cat neutering provided by Cats Protection.

Barbara Myers, chairman of RSPCA Wiltshire Mid Branch, said: “The green was filled with people and their lovely dogs who were all very well behaved.”

Mrs Myers also said a popular part of the event was the information given out about reptiles, a new edition added to the event last year.

“A lot of people in the area own reptiles and the more advice they get the better people can look after their pets,” she said.

The fun dog show had more than 115 entrants over the different classes with the most popular class being Prettiest Bitch followed by the sausage catching.

Among those taking part were friends Lori Thurlow, 22, of Devizes, and Xana L'Estrange from Swindon.

Much to the judge's surprise Miss Thurlow's pug Reggie managed to come second in the sausage catching despite his short and stocky frame.

His supporters whooped in delight when Reggie was awarded his blue rosette.
