A serious house fire in the centre of Market Lavington yesterday is believed to have started accidentally.

Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the mid-terraced property in the High Street at 1.15pm and found the roof well alight.

The fire had also spread to the top two floors of the three-storey house.

Six fire engines – from Devizes, Westbury, Trowbridge, Melksham, Bradford on Avon and Calne – together with the aerial appliance from Swindon were initially sent to the scene.

Six breathing apparatus wearers used three hose reel jets and two main jets to tackle the blaze, which was contained to the one property.

By 7pm, the attendance at the scene was reduced to two appliances, from Pewsey and Corsham, and a single crew from Devizes closed off the incident shortly after midnight.

The exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
