Church bells will ring out across Salisbury Plain this Easter as Imber’s historic church of St Giles opens its gates to visitors.

The 14th century church will be open from noon-5pm on Good Friday and 11am-4pm from Saturday to Easter Monday.

The village was evacuated by the War Office in 1943 when it was selected as a military training facility, with villagers forced to abandon their homes.

It is still owned by the Ministry of Defence, and is only opened to the public on select days each year.

Bells will be rung at noon on Saturday followed by a short concert of folk music, and children can take part in an Easter egg hunt around the grounds at 11.15am on Easter Sunday.

On Easter Monday bell ringers from Exeter Cathedral will peal the bells for two and a half hours from 1pm. Admission to the church and all events is free, with donations invited towards its maintenance.
