Neston villagers slam mine proposals

Objectors turned out in force to a three-hour display in Neston Memorial Hall last Thursday to slam plans to re-open a quarry.

Dozens turned up to hear family-run quarrying business Ham and Doulting Stone explain its plans to re-open Spring Park Quarry.

Wiltshire Council received 25 letters of objections to the scheme which involves 40 tonne lorries travelling daily along a new track through fields from the quarry to Dicketts Road, Neston.

Resident Sue Crane said: “It’s just not suitable to have large vehicles going through such a small village.”

Jean Hartley, of Green Hill, who has lived in the village for 71 years, said: “Traffic is going to increase and anything trundling through the village is going to be a nightmare.”

Following the meeting, mine manager Reuben Chappell said the company would consider creating a track to the B3353 near Gastard towards Melksham so as to avoid Neston.
