A WINDOW cleaner, who lives a minute away from the fire station in Corsham and worked as a retained firefighter, has hung up his fire kit for the last time.

Darren Cottle, of Barn Close, joined Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service 20 years ago after deciding he wanted a new challenge in life.

Last week, friends and colleagues of the much loved 48-year-old, who runs a window cleaning business with his wife Paula, came together at a special ceremony at Corsham Fire Station, where he was presented with a certificate by watch manager Mark Unwin.

"I am leaving the service with as much excitement as I was joining it," Mr Cottle said. "I am pleased I finished with a 20-year service medal and although I'll miss it, I won't miss getting up for shouts at two or three in the morning.

"I joined the service 20 years ago because a few of my friends did and I wanted a new challenge that I could fit alongside my work. It has been a really interesting experience and I have learnt so much about road traffic accidents, house fires and all sorts of things over the years, including being able to drive the appliances.

"It has been unforgettable and although we don't hear the outcome of each and every shout, you know you have made a difference to people's lives."

Mr Cottle, who said he is looking forward to spending more time with his family, did however encourage others to give firefighting a go.

"It is a big commitment to the emergency services," he said. "But if you can do it I would recommend it just for the feel good factor and being able to help the community."
