DOUBLE gold medallist Stephanie Millward has been named as the South West Para Swimmer of the Year.

The 36-year-old, who took home five medals at the London 2012 Paralympics and five medals, including her two golds, at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, was surprised with the Presidents Trophy after her training session at the Springfield Community Campus last Wednesday.

“I found out two or three days before when I received a phone call saying that the ASA had something for me,” she said. “It was a lovely surprise.

“They also gave it to me just after the session with the others which was really nice for them as it gave them something to aspire to.”

Millward, who is preparing for Tokyo 2020, has been speaking to people in the town with the hopes of inspiring others.

“I have realised my dream and I want to inspire others. They shouldn’t feel sorry for themselves - I want them to think they can do whatever they set their mind to.”
