ORGANISERS of the Corsham 10k have hailed this year's race as the best one yet after tweaks to the course and the organisation proved popular among runners.

The spring sun greeted more than 1,000 runners back to the finish line at Corsham Town Football Club on Sunday for the race which was fully booked two weeks ago.

"The 10k was the 35th we've held and probably the best yet," said race director Alex Fogwill. "We had 1,057 finishers, which is a great turnout and much fewer no shows than normally expected in a race – having beautiful weather must have helped.

"Lacock Road was closed for the first time this year and made the start and finish a much more pleasurable experience for both the organisers and the runners. This 10k has a great reputation and we are keen to keep it that way in finding small improvements year on year. As well as the enormous number of runners there was a back-up team of around 75 marshals and others to make it work well on the day."

Simon Nott, 23, from Calne Running Club, who has won eight of the last nine years, won the race in a total time of 32 minutes and 52 seconds while Asia Zmyslona crossed the line for the women in 40 minutes and 23 seconds followed shortly after by 16-year-old Jade Littlechild of Team Bath who broke the all-time record for a Junior Girl.

Mr Fogwill added: "It was an extremely good race and Jade has enormous potential to be a serious contender for many years to come."

So far, organisers have received positive feedback from the runners and the race director said it is a pleasure being involved with such a positive and community changing race.

He said: "The race has changed a lot in the last ten years but we have become the biggest 10k in Wiltshire and we think it is really positive. We get really positive feedback every year and we want to make it a good, enjoyable run for all.

"Although we haven't decided where the money raised will go this year, we think we have beaten the £3,000 from last year and we believe that the runners themselves would have raised around £300,000."
