A LITTLE bit of history was made last week as Corsham Primary became the first primary school in Wiltshire to earn a Healthy School Gold Award.

After years of working their way up from bronze and silver, on Monday representatives from the school were presented with a plaque as part of the Healthy School Awards.

Following a stringent assessment from examiners, the school met the criteria for the gold standard for its efforts to aid pupils in the classroom with their mental, physical and technological wellbeing.

The school’s Broadwood site headteacher, Kerry Parker, said: “We are absolutely delighted, it is quite an achievement and one we are very proud of - it has been a huge team effort.

“It is quite an honour to get this. Four assessors came down on the day and had quite a rigorous examination to see if we qualified and I am so happy we did.

"The kids have really got behind this. and are being given the opportunities they deserve. Gold level Wiltshire Healthy Schools has provided us with a unique opportunity to showcase our sustained commitment to the health and wellbeing of our pupils.

“I would like to thank to PSHE coordinators Claire Vines and Diane Hawkins who prepared our submission to the awarding panel and for organising the assessment visit to Broadwood, they were great.”

The school focused on counteracting cyber bulling, web safety, healthy eating and the holistic approach of teaching personal, social, health and economic education in its curriculum.

A gold award also went to Woodlands Primary in Salisbury, while bronze awards were presented to Cherhill Primary, Downton Primary in Salisbury, Larkrise School in Trowbridge, Seend Primary, Wylye Valley School near Warminster and St Mary’s RC primary in Chippenham.
